Things I Wish Every Mom Knew Before Booking the Session (as a Charlotte Family Photographer)

If I could sit down with every mom before she booked A session, this is what I’d tell her.
Not because these things make my job easier—but because they make your experience so much better.
Over the years, I’ve realized that most moms arrive carrying the same worries. They wonder if their children will cooperate, if they chose the right outfits, if their house is clean enough, or if they should have waited until they lost a few more pounds.
Can I let you in on a little secret?
Almost none of those things are what make a beautiful photograph.
Here are the things I wish every mom knew before booking a session.
You don’t have to wait for life to slow down.
There will always be another busy season, another home project, another reason to wait. Your children are growing now, and this season deserves to be remembered exactly as it is.
You don’t have to lose the baby weight first.
Your children won’t remember the number on the tag in your jeans. They’ll remember the way you held them, laughed with them, and loved them.
Your children don’t have to sit still.
Movement creates some of the most authentic images. Running, exploring, cuddling, and playing are all welcome here.
Your toddler doesn’t have to cooperate.
I don’t expect perfection from little ones. I meet them where they are, follow their lead, and allow their personalities to shine.
Your baby doesn’t have to sleep.
Wide eyes, tiny stretches, curious expressions, and little yawns all tell the story of this fleeting season just as beautifully.
Your house doesn’t have to be spotless.
For in-home sessions, I truly only need beautiful window light and the people you love most.
You don’t have to make your kids smile.
The best smiles happen naturally. I’ll never spend your session asking everyone to say “cheese.” I’d much rather capture genuine laughter and real connection.
You don’t have to look at the camera.
Some of the most treasured images are the ones where you’re simply looking at your children. Those moments feel real because they are.
Your outfits don’t have to be perfect.
Thoughtful, timeless styling certainly elevates a gallery, but your family’s connection will always matter more than perfectly coordinated clothes.
Your love is enough.
At the end of the day, that’s what I’m really photographing.
Not perfect behavior.
Not perfect outfits.
Not perfect homes.
Your love.
Because years from now, your children won’t look back and remember whether everything went according to plan. They’ll remember the way it felt to be wrapped in your arms.
And those are the memories worth preserving.
